7 reasons why good works cannot save us (+sermon) - SaintlyLiving (2023)

Today in this post you will discover the top 7 reasons why good works cannot save us or get us to heaven.

This is a question most people ask themselves, and it is asked because most people think that being a good person is enough to get into heaven, which is not true.

And today this article will show you the top 7 reasons why good deeds, no matter how good, cannot save us. Let us begin.

7 reasons good works can't save you

Below is a list of 7 reasons why good works cannot save you or earn your salvation, which only Jesus Christ can grant you through His grace and infinite mercy.

  • None is good.
  • Sin requires the shedding of blood.
  • Good works cannot remove our sinful nature.
  • Salvation is a free gift.
  • None is fair.
  • Good works cannot change your heart.
  • Salvation comes only by the grace of God.

1. Both are not good.

the Bible insideRomans 3:9-20affirms that no one is good and righteous in the eyes of God and that therefore our good works will never be enough to save us from sin and its consequences.

Many people think that good people exist only because of the superficial good deeds they do for other people, but what you should know, dear reader, is that anyone can do good deeds if it is easy and convenient.

Another reason none of us can be good enough to earn salvation through good works is that our good works are tainted with sin and often have ulterior motives.

For example, most people do good deeds for others just so that they will be seen as good people and get something in return for their good deeds.

The fact that you give to the poor and do any other charitable work for others does not automatically make you a good person, for good works alone do not change the disposition of your heart, which is deceptive and inherently bad.(Jeremiah 17:9).

We are all born with onesinful nature that naturally makes us want to do bad thingsand this sinful nature cannot be avoided by mere good works.

Therefore none of us is inherently good in God's eyes, because God's standards of goodness are so high that none of our good works can match them because of our fallen nature.

2. Sin needs bloodshed.

Another reason why our good works cannot save us is that without the shedding of blood accHebrews 9:22There can be no forgiveness of sins.

(Video) Why Do I Keep Sinning?

The forgiveness of sins is simply the act of God to forgive and forgive our sins, and this forgiveness of sins is made possible by what Jesus Christ did on the cross.

And it is this shedding of blood by Christ Jesus on the cross that makes possible the forgiveness of our sins, and since life is in blood, the shedding of blood was necessary for our sins to be forgiven and atoned for.

This is why in the Old Testament people sacrificed animals on the altar to atone for their sins when they sinned, and if good works saved us from our sins, Jesus Christ did not have to die for our sins and the animal sacrifice necessary in the Old Testament for the atonement of sins.

But since our good works cannot atone for our sins, another person's blood was needed for that purpose, and Christ, being without sin, was the only perfect sacrifice fit for it.(Hebrews 10:12-24).

It is no wonder that salvation and eternal life can only be found through Jesus Christ, for He was the only one willing to pay and atone for our sins by dying on the cross.

Our good works, on the other hand, cannot atone for our sins because in that case there is no shedding of blood to cover our sins.

3. Good works cannot remove our sinful nature.

The above reason is one of the main reasons why good works cannot save us because our good works do not have the power to cleanse us from sin.

One thing you should know is that all human beings are born with a sinful nature that we inherited from our first parents, Adam and Eve, who fell from grace when they sinned by cultivating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden ate.

And it is this sinful nature built into the heart of every man or woman that drives people to do all sorts of things to one another. That is why there is so much evil in this world.

No wonder when David sinned with Beersheba, he said inPsalm 51:5that she was conceived in sin and sharpened in iniquities by repenting of her sin of adultery.

Yes, you can do good works here and there to try to earn your salvation, but the fact of the matter is that unless you are saved by grace through faith, the sinful nature will still be present in your life, and you will keep doing bad things. even if you do . good works here and there.

Therefore one can do good and be a liar and a murderer at the same time. All of this is due to the sinful nature in every human being, which can only be dealt with by the washing and cleansing of the blood of Jesus Christ at salvation.

That's why John comes inJuan 1:29He said that Jesus Christ is the only Lamb of God who can wash away the sins of the world and mankind by shedding His blood for you and me so that our sins can be washed away and washed away.

4. Salvation is a free gift.

Another important reason good works cannot save you is that the salvation that gives eternal life through Jesus Christ is a free gift obtained by grace through faith.(Epheser 2:8,9).

You cannot buy or earn your salvation by pretending to be a good person or doing good works, for salvation is a free gift from God.

Salvation is the greatest gift of God's love He has shown mankind through many who reject it, which is truly sad. Most people think that their so-called good works will earn them their way to heaven, but they will find out for themselves.very wrong on judgment day.

Unless you have the salvation that brings eternal life, you will not go to heaven, which is full of righteousness because there are no sinners in heaven even if you do good things.

When God sent his Son to die for our sins, he knew that none of us can earn our way to heaven by our good works because our so-called good works do not meet his perfect standards.

And if our good works earned us our salvation, then God would not have to send his Son to die a horrible death on the cross for our sins.

By making salvation through Jesus Christ freely available, God has made it so easy that anyone, regardless of their status in society, can be saved simply by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ with all their hearts. Isn't that nice?

5. Nobody is fair.

noRomans 3:9:20,Paul says that no one is righteous in the sight of God, which simply means that none of us can claim to be righteous by our own righteousness.

According to the Bible, righteousness is simply being right in the eyes of God without sin, but none of us are without sin because we are all born sinners.

AndIsaiah 64:6it says that we are all like dirty things and that all our righteousness and good deeds are like dirty rags. Dirty rags in the sense that they are stained with sin.

One thing to remember is that God can only accept his righteousness in his kingdom and none of us have the righteousness necessary to qualify for heaven.

Our righteous actions cannot qualify us for heaven because they are tainted with the sin that stems from Adam's sinful nature with which we were all born.

But the good news is that God made His heavenly righteousness possible through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins.

When you become a truly saved Christian by accepting Christ into your life, you will be imparted that righteousness that all true believers in Christ have and will impart to you nowlive righteously and avoid sin in this present wicked world.

6. Good works cannot change your heart.

Another reason why your good deeds cannot save you is that they do not change the state of your heart. If your heart is bad by nature, you will do bad things whether you like it or not.

We are all evil by nature and corrupt on the inside, that's why we do the bad things we do, and in order for us to change, we need that.inner transformation of heart that comes through salvation.

No wonder Jesus speaks of being born again so that our old sinful nature that we were born with can be replaced with a new Christ-like nature that will cause us to stop doing the bad things we do , and start hating sin.

If you are truly saved, you will inherit a new heart and a new spirit that the Lord has promisedEzekiel 36:26that will make your life a new life of righteousness and you will hate your old sinful life.

This is because when you are saved you are essentially born again and that old sinful nature is completely replaced with the new nature of Christ that comes as a result of the new heart that gives you salvation.

It is this new heart of Christ that will make you a good person now, and if so, your good works will now come from a pure heart, filled with the love of God, and not from the selfish motives that have our natural sinful hearts.

Remember that it is the inner nature of your heart that determines your true character and who you really are as a person. You can do good deeds here and there, but if your heart is inherently bad, that bad nature of your heart will be revealed in due course.

7. Salvation comes only through the grace of God.

the Bible insideTito 2:11it says that the grace of God, which brings salvation and eternal life through Jesus Christ, has appeared to all.

(Video) Am I Me: Part 3

It is this grace, available after salvation, that enables one to deny all forms of ungodliness and worldly lust in which one formerly walked.

Without thatGod's special grace in your lifeNo matter how good you try to be, you will not be able to overcome the power of sin in your life and the sinful temptations that Satan throws in your way.

Many people try to be good in their willpower but often fail and wonder why it is so hard to break certain sinful habits in their lives.

This is because only the grace of God can help you overcome the power of sin, not your good works or your trying to be a good person through your strength and effort.

We are also initiatedEpheser 2:8,9that we are saved by grace alone, through faith, and not by our works, lest we boast.

In short, your good works cannot merit your salvation because they will not be sufficient to meet God's perfect standards required for acceptance, and salvation fills that gap. So why be in bondage to do good works to earn your salvation?
