TOGAF®: an agile approach

Additionally, factsheets can be configured to show not only the high-level strategic drivers, but also the individuals responsible for the applications being reviewed.

Example: For the following AC Management V1 fact sheet, three people with different roles and responsibilities were attached to the request. This makes it clear who is responsible for maintaining the data (see Figure 1).

Basic architecture and objective (TOGAF® Phase B, C, D)

Once you've established your architectural goals in Phase A, it's time to determine what the gaps are between your baseline and your baseline.green architecture(i.e. what you have versus what you want). From business to information systems and technology architectures: in phases B, C and D, you reveal what really exists in your company.

Once applications have been mapped to business functions and contextualized with information about how they will be used, a strategic view of your application landscape can be created to determine the value they can provide in future architectures. Decide whether applications should be left intact based on level of use and value, modernized through investment to maintain ongoing business value, merged or replaced due to redundancy, or phased out entirely (see Figure 2).

A data flow viewer describes how data objects are processed and exchanged. Several levels of technical attributes are available in the viewer to help enterprise architects gain a deep understanding of how to fully integrate an application.

See below how AC Management V1 connects to other services in a farm. It directly feeds HR Admin, which in turn communicates with Payroll Europe to provide data to Salary Compact (as shown in Figure 3).

IT Component Matrix

Examine IT components (eg database, operating system, web server, etc.) and their corresponding technical attributes and service lifecycles of all operational hierarchies within an IT component matrix report. In particular, LeanIX EAM uses technology stacks to categorize IT components to provide a comprehensive view of technology landscapes. For example, as shown in Figure 4 below, the lifecycles of services that contribute to a provider can be verified.

Transformations Roadmap (TOGAF® Phase E, F)

Once the architecture has been effectively described and addressed, the future steps are defined concretely in phases E and F. What is changing with this architectural redesign? Can plans guide stakeholders?

In its current form, does a project represent value for an entire operation? A LeanIX project portfolio report groups applications by business value and project risk to determine current needs. If an IT administrator wants to know which applications should remain integrated or which should be dropped, assessments can be made based on the report (as in the example below).

As can be seen in Figure 5, there appears to be a group of architectural data that provides “significant value” to business value, but also a problematic grouping that provides only “minor value”.

Use the lifecycle view of the LeanIX Application Matrix report to determine when or if critical applications need to be phased out. See the image below, which shows the apps listed by department and country/region. Brazil's AC Management V1 service will end in 2019, but AC Management V2 is in line to replace it.

In addition to life cycles, there are many other points of view. Sort by Functional Suitability to get high-level details about the quality of an application to determine whether it is 'Poor', 'Poor', 'Suitable' or 'Perfect'.

It's important to know if there are successors when applications reach the end of their useful life. A LeanIX Application Roadmap report shows users in clear terms what's been happening and for how long, and what's ready to be replaced. In addition, an application roadmap lists the lifecycles of each application's corresponding components.

In the following roadmap, we see the lifecycle timeline of "AC Management V1" and its related successors. While it appears to be on a collision course towards the depletion area (yellow), the replacement application ("AC Management V2") will connect securely to ensure a clean transition.

Implementation (TOGAF® Phase G, H)

Everything is decided. Visions were drawn and the builders' needs perfectly formulated. This is the time to implement an architecture.

The information needed to update projects can be collected from all managers without having to send individual emails. Who is the TOGAF® certification intended for?

TOGAF® certification is very useful for enterprise architects and other IT leaders. While they often introduce new features, the core structure and common methodology remain the same. Recognized around the world, the TOGAF® certification allows you to demonstrate your ability to use the TOGAF® framework to successfully implement new technologies and manage enterprise architectures.

How do I obtain a TOGAF® certification?

One of the surest ways to understand the transformative benefits of LeanIX EAM is to take the time to learn the fundamentals of TOGAF®.
